Just like our bodies, our skin can become dehydrated. Read on as we discuss how to differentiate between dry and dehydrated skin.
Experts agree that around 60% – the majority – of the
human body is made up of water. This is why H2O is such an important part of our existence; our bodies need water in order to function optimally. This doesn’t just apply to our internal organs but also the largest one: our skin (or epidermis). Just as we can become dehydrated by not absorbing enough water, so can our skin!
The question is: What is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
What is dry skin?
This can be a constant skin type but anyone can occasionally experience a period of
dry skin. This means that your skin lacks the necessary oils (or sebum) to keep it nourished. Dry skin usually presents as tightness, itchiness, flaking and a rough finish.
Treat it Wash your face and body with non-stripping cleanser and soap. Avoid using hot water that will remove the natural oils from the skin. Moisturize with a rich moisturizer and use a
humidifier to combat dry air.
What is dehydrated skin?
Anyone can have dehydrated skin, even people with an oily type. This is when the skin is lacking in water and can lead to a dry, dull appearance. Common symptoms include rough, scaly patches of skin, more defined fine lines, and less elasticity.
Treat it Other than drinking enough water, wash your face with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Incorporate a
hyaluronic acid serum into your routine and use a humectant cream or balm to moisturize and prevent transepidermal water loss.
