When it comes to dry skin, some ingredients are more effective than others. Here are 4 to add to your skincare routine.
As we head towards winter and the temperature starts to drop, we can start to experience dry skin. Not just a seasonal concern, some people deal with it all year round. Not the same as
dehydrated skin, dry skin can lack the oils – or sebum – necessary to keep your
skin barrier functioning properly and lock in moisture. Dehydrated skin is also a condition that can be rectified, whereas dry skin is a skin type that needs to be managed.
Fortunately, it can be! All it takes are a few adjustments to your skincare routine by adding certain ingredients to your routine. Here are four that are known to add much-needed moisture and provide relief to dry skin.
Ceramides
Ceramides are the naturally-occurring
lipids or fatty acids found and produced within your skin. They play an important role in keeping your skin barrier functioning optimally by preventing transepidermal water loss. For those who suffer from conditions such as psoriasis or eczema, it can also soothe irritation and inflammation
Hyaluronic acid
Known as nature’s moisture molecule, hyaluronic acid is a must-use ingredient for dry and dehydrated skin alike. It traps moisture and locks it into your skin to keep it plump and juicy. Be advised that this ingredient should be applied to damp skin, and should be followed up with an emollient.
Vitamin E
Found in many popular skincare ingredients, including almond oil, avocado, and sunflower seeds, vitamin E is a powerful
antioxidant. This means that it has many abilities, including boosting the skin’s water levels and, most importantly, protecting it from free-radical damage, such as pollution and sun damage, which can make skin more prone to dryness.
Jojoba oil
This ingredient is extracted from nature and is used in oil form rather than being manufactured synthetically in a lab. It is the closest of the facial oils to sebum and, being lightweight, it makes for a great choice for balancing every skin type. Jojoba oil can give your dry skin a moisture boost.
