Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) therapy Sculptra treats facial lines, wrinkles, and volume loss through the stimulation of the body’s own collagen development. While hyaluronic acid filler products, such as Juvederm and Restylane, fill skin lines and hollows through a volume effect of the hyaluronic acid gel and water absorption, Sculptra works through a completely different mechanism.
Sculptra is comprised of dissolved suture material, poly-L-lactic acid. Injection of poly-L-lactic acid into the deep layers of the skin and overlying the bones of the face stimulates the body to generate new collagen fibers. The production of new collagen in the skin and deeper soft tissue of the face creates a long-lasting improvement on facial contours, wrinkles, and volume loss. Sculptra is an excellent treatment for pan-facial volumization, including the cheeks, jawline, and temples. Off-label Sculptra can be used to treat fine lines and skin thinning on the chest as well. Treatments with Sculptra typically involve a series of injections, separated by 4-6 weeks. In general, 2 or 3 injection sessions are required to achieve the desired effect.
