The most common types of rosacea include papulopustular (think typical ‘adult’ onset acne, with red pimples on the nose, chin and cheeks) and erythematotelangiectatic (diffuse small blood vessels on the cheeks, chin, and nose leading to easy blushing).
For papulopustular rosacea, treatment tends to focus on reducing triggers and treating inflammation with antibiotics/anti-inflammatory therapies.
Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea can improve somewhat with topical therapies such as metronidazole, Rhofade, and Mirvaso, as well as avoiding the ‘triggers’ (those exposures that lead to a blushing episode). The best treatment for this type of rosacea is usually with either pulsed-dye laser or an intense-pulsed light device.
